Supporters,
When it comes to nutritional guidelines, the health and
well-being of Canadians should be our federal government’s first priority. But with
the flawed Front-of-Package labelling guidelines proposed by Health Canada
still under consideration, government continues to risk putting both the health
of Canadians and the health of our economy in jeopardy.
Under these new guidelines, Health Canada would classify
foods as “unhealthy” based solely on three factors: their levels of sodium, sugar
and saturated fat, without taking into account whether those foods contain
essential ingredients or have been shown to reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
That means many dairy products rich in calcium, vitamin A and vitamin B-12 like
yogurt and cheese would be required to feature a warning label, discouraging their consumption, while most potato
chips and diet sodas would not.
That’s not right;
any framework that suggests potato chips and diet sodas are “healthier” than nutrient-rich
foods is obviously flawed and could lead Canadians to make unhealthy choices.
We need your help to
push back against these flawed guidelines.
Send a submission to Health Canada’s Front-of-Pack
labelling consultation today, calling on them to take the time to consider
all the available evidence and create a framework that reflects our best
scientific knowledge.
Government needs to get this right, and we need your help to
make sure they do!
